Three highlights in Decorative Arts
THE sale is called Fine & Decorative Arts and when it comes to decorative arts, we have some fantastic lots coming up on June 19, writes David Fergus.
Here are three of my personal highlights from our selection of pictures, glass and ceramics.
Lot 442: ‘Guyana X’ by Aubrey Williams
This mixed media abstract composition on canvas by Aubrey Williams (Guyana 1926-1990) is as intriguing as it is stunning. Signed and titled ‘Guyana X’ on the back, it dates from 1963 and measures approximately 76cm x 61cm. Williams started drawing and painting at a young age and moved from Guyana to the UK in 1952. He staged his first London exhibition in 1954 and became an increasingly significant figure in Britain’s post-war avant-garde art scene. One of the founders of the 1966 Caribbean Artists Movement, Williams is such an important figure and this picture is definitely a personal highlight of this sale. This is a piece of art which has meaning behind it in more ways than one. It’s a piece of history. Est: £100 - £150 plus Buyer's Premium
Lot 303: A Whitefriars banjo vase
This Whitefriars banjo vase designed by Geoffrey Baxter, pattern No.9681 in Kingfisher blue, is in lovely condition. A fantastic example of this iconic design in a brilliant colour, too! Height approximately 32cm. Est: £500 - £600 plus Buyer's Premium
Lot 299: Crich Pottery by Dianah Worthy
This Crich Pottery by Dianah Worthy is such a nice piece of design. Here we have a cylindrical vase of tapering form with mottled overlapping panel decoration, incised to the base, approximately 29.5cm tall. Plus there is a Crich Pottery 1977 Silver Jubilee mug and saucer, inscribed to the base. Handmade and excellent quality yet still suitable for all budgets. Est: £40 - £50 plus Buyer's Premium
