Tamworth coin collection shines at Lichfield auction
A TREASURE trove of coins collected by an ex-serviceman totalled £25,980 under the hammer with Richard Winterton Auctioneers last month.Tony Baker’s numismatic archive was presented across 52 lots at The Lichfield Auction Centre on Monday, February 7 and attracted a huge amount of interest from coin collectors all over the world.
Highlights included a 1680 Charles II gold coin selling at £2,700, pictured, and a UK Britannia four-coin collection with £100, £50, £25 and £10 proof coins – the highest quality possible – in 22ct gold making £2,500.
A gold Anglo-Gallic Salut d'Or hammered in the reign of Henry VI (1422-1453) fetched £2,250 and a cased set of ‘The Magnificent Seven’ gold coins – one coin each from Australia, Canada, China, Mexico, South Africa, the USA and the United Kingdom – sold at £1,900.

Dad of three, grandfather of seven and great-grandfather of three, Mr Baker died in May 2021 aged 83.
Born in Bolehall, Tamworth, he joined the Army aged 19 and served for 25 years, finishing as Warrant Officer Class 2.
He went on to manage Tamworth Progressive Club, where he put on variety acts and other functions, and in retirement did much traveling, particularly in Australia.
Mr Baker and his wife Gill – who died in 2002 – had three sons, Wayne and twin brothers Darrel and Dean.
Seeking professional advice on the coin collection, the family booked a free consultation at Richard Winterton Auctioneers and were pleasantly surprised to discover the potential value.
A UK Britannia collection of four 22ct gold proof coins went under the hammer for £2,500.
