Rare gold sovereign from 1835 discovered
A COIN considered little more than a curious trinket could end up netting its Yoxall owner several thousand pounds.
The 1835 William IV gold full sovereign had been encased in a glass mount which has become so tarnished the condition of the coin was impossible to see.
So the owner took the sovereign and a number of other coins to one of Richard Winterton Auctioneers’ weekly free Tuesday valuation days at The Lichfield Auction Centre, Wood End Lane, Fradley Park.
Upon investigating the haul, expert Phil Bridge was able to tell the gobsmacked owner that his ‘trinket’ is worth around £1,200 – possibly more.
“Not only is it a full gold sovereign, it is low mintage – only 723,000 was made,” said Mr Bridge.
“It was mounted in between glass which was so scratched it was impossible to see the condition.
“With further investigation, we discovered the coin is in beautiful condition – after all, it’s been protected by the glass for years.”
Furthermore, the sovereign was among a veritable treasure trove of other gold coins.
They are all coming up for sale in Richard Winterton’s Coins, Medals and Militaria Sale at The Lichfield Auction Centre from noon on January 22.
