On track for Railwayana Sale

AN IMPRESSIVE selection of railway memorabilia is on track to steam under the hammer at a Lichfield auction next week.

Highlights include a platform bench slat marked Lichfield Trent Valley (pictured here with expert Jon Price), signal box lever plates from Lichfield City, a large GWR Platform One sign, station name boards and a LNWR brass bell.

The sale features assorted railway notices, locomotive whistles, cast iron gradient and boundary markers, a collection of cast iron wagon and bridge plates, signal arms, signal box diagrams and an interesting selection of assorted original maps and plans.

Also up for auction are prints from railway carriages, train pictures, meticulously labelled photographs, vintage tickets and a veritable library of books and other printed material.

There is even a selection of hats including a station master’s peaked cap emblazoned with gold braid.

The specialist Railwayana Sale with Richard Winterton Auctioneers takes place at The Lichfield Auction Centre, Wood End Lane, Fradley Park, from 9.30am on Thursday, July 18.

Items can be viewed on Saturday, July 13, between 9.30am and noon; on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday July 15-17 between 9am-4pm; and on the morning of the sale from 8.30am until the auction starts.

Find the catalogue online as part of our Three Day Sale from July 16-18 - Railwayana starts from Lot 1161.

“This is an absolute treasure trove for railway buffs in general and those with an interest in Lichfield’s rail history in particular,” said Mr Winterton.

“There’s a wide selection of items large and small which range from collectables suitable for sitting on a shelf to signage to set off a model railway to items which would make a superb talking point in a garden.”

The Railwayana Sale will arrive towards the end of a busy week for Richard Winterton Auctioneers.

Monday, July 15, will see the family firm’s inaugural Watch & Designer Sale at 6pm in St Mary’s in the Market Square in the heart of Lichfield city centre.

As well as a selection including Chanel handbags and Rolex watches, the auction will include a trio of charity lots in aid of We Love Lichfield – a cricket bat signed by cricketer Graeme Swann and sports broadcaster Pat Murphy, a 2019 ICC World Cup England jersey signed by the team just prior to a pivotal victory over India and, courtesy of Michael’s Menswear, a limited edition RAF Red Arrows 2019 signed by ‘Red 1’ to ‘Red 9’ and the aerobatic team’s commanders.

Viewing for the Designer Sale and charity lots will be at The Lichfield Auction Centre on Saturday, July 13, from 9.30am until noon and then at St Mary’s on the Monday from midday.

Tuesday (July 16) sees a specialist Coins, Medals & Militaria Sale and on the Wednesday will be the auction of city historian Laura Bowcutt’s comprehensive archive of the pubs of Lichfield and her collection of Lichfield postcards.

The archive and the coins and militaria can be viewed at The Lichfield Auction Centre on Saturday, July 13, between 9.30am and noon, on Monday, July 15, between 9am-4pm and on the morning of the sale from 8.30am.

The pubs archive can also be viewed on Tuesday, July 16, between 9am-4pm.
