Huge haul of whisky, wine and port found

A FABULOUS treasure trove of rare whisky, cognac, vintage port and wine has come to light in Tamworth – and valuers are tippled pink at the discovery.

The cellarful of more than 500 bottles has been carefully collected over many years but now the owner has decided to call time on his hobby.

Each bottle will now be meticulously researched and catalogued.

Rob French, pictured above with some of the haul, is the wine, whisky and port valuer at Richard Winterton Auctioneers.

“It’s the largest individual collection I’ve examined,” he said.

“The quantity, variety and the quality of some of the items is absolutely fascinating.

“It is going to be a real labour of love cataloguing this collection.”

Rarities which have already come to light include The Macallan 10-year-old Scottish whisky – one such bottle was sold at The Lichfield Auction Centre in September for £320 – and a 1963 Croft vintage port, which is worth well over £100.

Cognacs include special edition Remy Martin and Courvoisier; there are also dozens of bottles of fine wine.

Everything will be marketed through The Lichfield Auction Centre, with the rarest items expected to be marked in a specialist sale on December 12.

A team of valuers from at Richard Winterton Auctioneers will be back in The Wedgwood Suite at Tamworth’s Castle Hotel on Monday, October 29, between 11am-12.30pm.

Members of the public are invited to bring their collectables, heirlooms, antiques and curiosities along for appraisal.

Mr French and his colleagues also carry out free valuations at The Lichfield Auction Centre, Wood End Lane, Fradley Park, every Tuesday from 9.30am-4pm. Free, no obligation home visits are available for large collections or big items.
