Beatles For Sale! John Lennon, George Harrison and Ringo Starr autographs sell for £2,900 at Lichfield auction

BEATLEMANIA was back in Lichfield this week as signatures from three members of the legendary band dating back almost 60 years went under the hammer for £2,900.

The autograph book featuring a page signed by John Lennon, George Harrison and Ringo Starr was included in Richard Winterton Auctioneers’ Autumn Sale at The Lichfield Auction Centre on Monday, September 26.

It was in 1963 that the vendor’s brother was lucky enough to attend a filming of Thank Your Lucky Stars as a guest of his uncle, a sales director of BASF tapes in London.

The lad was invited into the room where three of The Beatles happened to be eating while his uncle set about organising the taping and managed to obtain the autographs of John, George and Ringo.

Paul McCartney was elsewhere waving to fans so was unfortunately unable to sign.

“The Beatles still reign supreme in the world of music and popular culture and consequently interest remains strong, especially when there is such good provenance,” said auctioneer Richard Winterton.

“A well-deserved, wonderful result at auction generating a hammer price of £2,900.”

Other highlights from Monday’s auction included three pieces of antique Georgian period jewellery totalling £6,800, a single owner collection of Swarovski crystal figurines making £4,690 and a pair of early 20th century leather Chesterfield sofas selling at £4,400.

An oil painting by Ethel Gabrain made £1,450 and a collection of limited edition sculptures by popular artist Doug Hyde totalled £3,950.

Hammer highlights: A vintage British Rail ‘totem’ station sign for Hall Green, sold £900; Georgian diamond cluster brooch, sold £2,600; and a very rare bottle of White Horse Cellar whisky, sold £500.

Collectables included a vintage British Rail ‘totem’ station sign for Hall Green in ‘barn find condition’ selling at £900, an oak-cased Victorian silver tea service fetching £850, a ‘very rare’ bottle of White Horse Cellar whisky making £500 and a bottle of the iconic wine Chateau Mouton Rothschild 1952 selling at £400.
